Skolkovo is a Moscow-based state-of-the-art scientific and technological innovation complex. It has become a hub for the development and commercial use of new technologies developed in Russia.

Skoltech researchers and their colleagues conducted a study, based on which they were able to find out how quickly a person is able to remember new words.

To do this, the researchers analyzed changes in brain activity during the study of new words. As a result, the experts found that cortical representations of the sound and meaning of new words are formed in just 1-2 hours, and not on the second day, as previously thought. Recent data can help in the diagnosis of various speech disorders, as well as in the improvement of the efficiency of educational programs.  

It can help improve modern teaching methods

The authors of the study urge to use the holistic approach - if we think globally, our results point to the extremely important role of interactive learning as opposed to passive learning procedures, which are widely presented in the literature. The key role is played by both personal experience of interaction and emotions during the task, which refers us to the Pavlov paradigm of conditioned reflexes. However, in linguistics and methodology of teaching foreign languages the method of reinforcement is still underestimated.
