The Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist party decided to vote against amendments to the Constitution.
“Everyone has to make their own decision: is it possible to vote for the “new edition” of the Yeltsin Constitution? Our answer is No. We cannot support such a document,” the Central Committee of the Communist party of the Russian Federation said in a statement.
According to the Communists, this voting is nothing but a ritual. “Some amendments are important and encouraging. However, on the whole, they do not lead to the rejection of presidential autocracy and oligarchic rule. The amendments do not make Russia a social state. They do not protect society from the destructive effects of anti-Russian prejudice, Russophobia and anti-Sovietism. They do not provide national security and true sovereignty,” the document says.
The Communist party statement also points out that the all-Russia vote is organized by the Central Election Commission according to a legally questionable procedure. Each specific amendment is not voted on separately, and voices “For” or “Against” the introduced changes can only be expressed “in bulk.”
As previously reported, the Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov said that the faction would not vote for constitutional amendments during the discussion in the State Duma, as the final version of the amendments did not take into account the proposals of the deputies of the Communist faction.
Russian President Vladimir Putin set the date for voting on amendments to the Basic law for July 1.
